About the Temple

Ochira is unlike any other temple in Kerala. There is no sreekovil, no idol and no daily pooja in the usual sense. On about 36 acres of open ground beside the national highway, devotees worship Parabrahma – the formless Supreme – under old banyan and peepal trees, praying before two raised tree platforms (aalthara) that tradition links with Shiva and Vishnu. Pilgrims lovingly call the place Dakshina Kashi, the Kashi of the south.

The ground is open to all, and for generations people of every caste have prayed here side by side. Ochira is also known as a place of refuge, where elderly and destitute people find food and shelter. Through the year the quiet field comes alive several times – for the twelve days of Panthrandu Vilakku in Vrischikam, for the mock battle of Ochira Kali in Mithunam, and after Onam, when towering decorated bulls are drawn in from the surrounding villages.

History & Aithihyam

Many stories are told about how Ochira became holy. The best known concerns Akavoor Chathan, who in the old tales of the Parayi Petta Panthirukulam is one of the twelve children of the scholar Vararuchi. The story goes that Chathan, a simple servant in a Brahmin household, worshipped the formless Parabrahma with such sincerity that the Divine revealed itself to him at this spot – some versions say in the form of a buffalo that vanished into a pond. Devotees believe that his eleven brothers and sisters still come to visit him at Ochira every year during the twelve days of Panthrandu Vilakku.

The field in front of the platforms is called Padanilam – the battlefield. In the 18th century soldiers of Kayamkulam and the neighbouring kingdoms are said to have fought here (accounts differ on the opponents), and Ochira Kali, the mock battle fought every Mithunam in knee-deep water, keeps that memory alive. Even the name has several explanations; one traces it to Onattuchira, a reservoir that belonged to the Kayamkulam rulers.

Local tradition says that when Velu Thampi Dalawa wished to build a proper temple here, a devaprasnam revealed that the deity wanted none, and so only the tree platforms were built. The temple is run by committees elected under its own bye-laws, and in December 2024 the Supreme Court appointed a retired High Court judge to conduct fresh elections. Its administration also runs charitable institutions, and the grounds have long given shelter to old and abandoned people.

Before you visit

Dress code

There is no shrine to enter, so the rules are simpler than at most Kerala temples. Wear modest clothes and take off your footwear near the aalthara and the lamp areas. Customs can change – follow the temple's current notices.

Entry

The grounds are open day and night and anyone may walk in. By tradition, the enclosed area right around the aalthara is kept for Hindu worship; everyone is welcome in the rest of the grounds. Bhasmam (sacred ash) – and, for some devotees, a pinch of the ground's soil – is taken as prasadam.

Crowds and best time

The biggest crowds come during Panthrandu Vilakku (Vrischikam 1–12, mid to late November), on Irupathettam Onam (28 days after Thiruvonam, usually September–October) and for Ochira Kali (Mithunam 1–2, mid-June). On ordinary days the field is calm; early morning and evening are cooler than midday.

Nearby

Krishnapuram Palace – 18th-century palace with the famous Gajendra Moksham mural, a short drive north.
Kayamkulam – town about 10 km north.
Kollam – city on Ashtamudi lake, about 35 km south.
